Celebrating Scholarship and Service at Riverdale’s NHS Induction
by Bridget Gallens
On Sunday, October 25th, Riverdale National Honor Society welcomed 19 new members during its induction ceremony at Riverdale Middle School. The National Honor Society recognizes students who demonstrate scholarship, leadership, service, and character. During the ceremony, current officers Bridget Gallens, Claire Arnold, and Grace Schmidt spoke about the pillars and what these principles mean to each member. Cole Barrett, Vice President, then introduced the first guest speaker, Melissa Secker, who emphasized the importance of members living out their values in the National Honor Society. Melissa said, “Having taught many of you throughout your educational career, I have always said that if there is one thing I would like you to take away from my classroom, it would be this: Be yourself. Believe in yourself. And always strive to be the best version of yourself.¨ RHS Dean of Students, Brian Carman, also spoke at the event and emphasized how he believes the members will make an impact on their school and community. Throughout the school year, NHS members can have a positive influence through volunteer opportunities, service projects, and leadership activities. By demonstrating academic success and setting an example for their peers, members uphold the four pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Advisor Hillery Martinez shared her excitement about welcoming the new members, saying: “We are so excited to welcome our newest NHS members! These students have worked hard to get here, and we can’t wait to see the positive impact they make in our school and community!” Following induction, the National Honor Society now has 40 members committed to upholding the pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
